European Balboa Park

'Twas a reportedly chilly day (in the high 60s!) in San Diego. Even a round of drizzle misted the city. We had attempted to take advantage of free museum day in Balboa Park last Tuesday but the radiating heat drove us to seek refuge at the shore. Today, however, boasted perfect weather for museum strolling. One might wonder why we didn't actually enter any museums? Well, for one, it wasn't free museum day (we are on a budget, after all). And two, Balboa Park's architecture, international flare and street performers offer a bevy of outdoor entertainment, and it is all free to boot!  I believe we most enjoy the park's atmosphere: VERY European. And many of the people frequenting Balboa are indeed international tourists. Toss in some unusually cloudy skies with the many accents and languages spoken around us and we are suddenly transported to a European city like no other. Needless to say, we had a very pleasant afternoon.

Its very small museum, but its a favorite place in Balboa Park. The size isn't impressive, but the quality of the collection is first rate and the presentation is spectacular. The San Diego Zoo is the worst offender, but some of the Balboa Park museums charge at least double what their collection warrants.
